In Affinity
In Affinity is an installation created in reflection and appreciation of the individual and collective relationships in a family, and the complexities within those. Through visual research of familial memorabilia, stories, and personal experiences the artist created works inspired by closeness and memory. The archival and personal expressions explore the vulnerable, empathetic, and honest nature which shapes relationships.
The environment invites sensory perception, asking the viewer to smell, watch, listen and interact with the space to fully immerse
themselves in a time capsule of family memories from the past and present. The use of monochromatic and deep blue color schemes embodies an essence of timelessness. The artist’s use of multi-disciplinary artwork including photography, paint, film, and assemblage frames the ideas of variety and complexity in family. Minimal details of light, shadow and shaping space provide a sense of homeliness and movement. Each object and artwork in the space is intentional to create an overarching feeling for the viewer’s experience.
Materials directly come from the artist’s home, making private objects and memories public. As an intimate space of storytelling, the artist intends to share a feeling of simplicity, collectively showcasing distinct moments of time. The artist believes family is chosen, and is thankful she chooses her biological family members to uphold that role. Through this experience, she encourages the viewer to reflect on their own experiences with loved ones, and enjoy exploring the installation.
